£64.000 compensation for race discrimination
Kalmesh Shah, 30, who worked at the Honda factory for nearly two years, alleged that he was moved randomly between production line jobs without training, was bullied and refused toilet breaks by his supervisor. His poor treatment led to deterioration in his physical and mental health. The final straw was his supervisor calling him a f*****g Indian, following which he quit.
Mr Shah was awarded £15,000 for injury to feelings, including £10,000 pounds for psychiatric damage, £18,496 for the loss of earnings since he resigned, and two and half years future loss of earnings of £28,356, plus interest, totalling £64,000.
The employment tribunal said “We consider that there is evidence of a management ‘cover-up’ that untrained employees, including Mr Shah, were switched around the production areas to avoid having to stop the line.”
A Honda spokesperson said: “We accept the tribunal’s findings. This case is a very unfortunate ‘one-off’. We deeply regret the offence to Mr Shah caused by an individual associate.”
