As the world of information rights is ever-changing, with constant developments in case law and technology, the ICO have spent some time developing a clearer strategy for its guidance on ever-changing rights, creating four spines reflecting each key area.

The ICO have completed a full audit of its existing guidance, reviewing what needs removing or updating, and looking at how it can improve the indexing and navigation. The focus of the ICO external guidance is now a spine for each key area, creating a full ‘guide’ to each of the main pieces legislation the ICO regulates:

•Guide to Data Protection
•Guide to Privacy and Electronic Communications
•Guide to Freedom of Information
•Guide to Environmental Information Regulations

The ICO believe that these end-to-end guides are the best introduction to the legislation and they contain links to more detailed pieces of guidance. They also sit alongside codes of practice, the other key building blocks of data protection guidance. The A-Z guidance index, which helps find specific pages, has also been improved. The ICO have also developed a new guidance template, to give greater consistency and to make documents clearer.
