Government U-turn on tribunal fees looks very unlikely

HM Courts and Tribunals Service have published the minutes of the latest national employment tribunal user group meeting. Bill Dowse, from the MoJ, who led the Ministry of Justice’s internal review of tribunal fees, confirmed that the team had received a number of submissions and reports containing “useful information”. At present the internal review report is with the relevant Minister. Dowse stated that it was not possible to share the contents of the report at present or to predict how the Minister would proceed. It was hoped that the Minister’s position would be known by the end of the year. Dowse indicated, however, that he doubted whether fees would be abolished, but fee remission changes might be possible, but without departing from a common scheme for remission of fees generally. So at this stage it appears that the view expressed by many that fees have harmed access to justice have not been persuasive.
