Staff augmentation – the answer to the IT talent shortage

The dwindling nature of the IT talent-pool has enabled talent to hold all the chips in the recruitment poker game. Wages, onboarding, and training are just a handful of the rising costs that organisations are having to pay to resolve the recruitment crisis.

The ongoing scarcity of talent is presenting considerable difficulties for companies across industries, with 62 per cent of organisations having indicated they are currently facing a skills shortage. In fact, if this current trajectory continues, by 2026, more than 90 per cent of organisations worldwide will suffer from the pain of the IT skills crisis.

Staff Augmentation: what is it?

IT staff augmentation is the process of temporarily hiring external personnel from a third-party. This can be used to fulfil short-term projects, address skill gaps, manage seasonal workloads, expand development teams, and support digital transformation plans. By accessing a pre-vetted network of experts, organisations can quickly fill critical roles without the shifting costs and long lead times of traditional recruitment.

The IT industry is rapidly utilising this strategy to solve the talent conundrum. In fact, the global staff augmentation market is expected to reach $145 billion by 2027. The benefits of staff augmentation extend well beyond simply giving organisations access to talent. It also reduces payroll and termination fees, avoids the cost of delays with experts on demand, and utilises build-operate-transfer (BOT) services for increased efficiency.

Addressing the rising costs of recruitment

Delivering a project on time is critical for revenue and business performance. However, when an organisation lacks the talent to achieve it, these projects can be extremely costly. Considering shortages like this, enterprises are faced with two outcomes: they hire nobody else, and the project likely fails, or they hire, train, and onboard new recruits, which ramps up the costs of the project. IT staff augmentation alleviates this financial burden while increasing staff numbers by giving businesses immediate access to skilled professionals who are ready to work from day one.

Unproductive time is when an employee works ineffectively, leading to wasted time or resources. This can occur for many reasons such as poor planning, mistakes, distractions, or ineffective training.

This means if a project changes and the employee is unfamiliar with how to fulfil its needs, the organisation will pay for time that is producing little to no tangible progress. While the quickest way to address this issue is through the premature ending of the employee’s contract, this, in turn, leads to termination costs.

Adding to this, if an employee is fired or made redundant, they are often offered financial compensation in the form of severance pay.  This may incur greater costs than unproductive hours spent. By having project-based specialists on a temporary basis, businesses can take greater control regarding their actual costs. When a project needs to change, it is possible to adjust teams effortlessly without the fiscal ramifications of unproductive time or severance fees.

Recruiting skilled talent prevents unnecessary costs

The nature of the project is crucial when deciding whether to hire permanently or not. If the project is not fully defined, organisations can find themselves stuck with incongruent talent or with high termination fees. For example, if an employee’s skills are mismatched to the new nature of the project, at the very least the project will experience delays until the employee is re-trained – costly from both a time and financial perspective.

Indeed, it is essential that projects are executed on time. Nevertheless, large-scale IT initiatives also demand significant attention throughout the whole company. IT staff augmentation enables organisations to quickly recruit the correct talent, reducing the possibility for delays that could otherwise damage customer satisfaction, revenue, and competitive positioning.

Leveraging BOT services to spearhead efficiency

The recruitment, training, and management of new talent can severely overwhelm and deplete an organisation’s existing resources – BOT services can act as the ultimate ‘silver bullet’ to rectify this issue. Once this function is fully operational, control is transferred over to the client.
