The official minutes of the latest employment tribunals national user group indicate a 165% increase in claims and significant delays in listing cases involving multi-day hearings. The ET President reported that there had been a 165% increase in single claims in April to June 2018 compared to the preceding year and explained that it was taking 12-18 months to list cases for a final hearing in some regions, usually those of 5+ days duration. The difficulty related to judicial resource, i.e. the reduced number of salaried judges, plus the current lack of availability of fee-paid judges and members who were able to commit to multi-day hearings, but recruitment was underway.
