The recent ban on legal highs by the Government has been welcomed by leading employment law expert, ELAS.
Danny Clarke, the firm’s head of occupational health and safety, who also sits on the European Workplace Drug Testing Society, says: “The ban of legal highs is a welcome move as it will give employers greater autonomy and clarity when dealing with employees that may use such substances, or are in possession of them at work.
“It’s important to remember that all drugs carry health risks and that these known health risks, and perhaps many more which are yet to be uncovered – apply to legal highs.” A recent survey by OnePoll, commissioned by ELAS, unveiled that a quarter of the British workforce admitted to working whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Danny adds: “Our research has indicated that there is a significant issue with substance abuse affecting the workforce. Not only do employers need to be aware of the issue but they must to take a proactive approach to minimise the risk to the safety of all staff and customers as well as the impact of any legal, productivity and emotional costs. With the bill now passed through Government, the blanket ban on legal highs is a promising step that could see a reduction in substance abuse in the workplace.”
