Clegg’s NEETS announcement welcomed

Nick Clegg has announced plans to address the one million 16-24 year-olds dubbed “Neets” – those not in education, employment or training. The initiative is part of the Government's youth contract scheme, announced in November 2011 in a bid to tackle youth unemployment.

David Rudick, VP International Markets at job site Indeed.com,  said this new initiative will help to simplify the job search for young people and equip them with the information they need to inform their career choices, and ultimately help them find the right role: He commented: “Nick Clegg's announcement is a welcome step in addressing the issue of youth unemployment. The director of the British Chambers of Commerce recently indicated that 16 to 24-year-olds were almost three times more likely to be unemployed than other members of the workforce. Under the new framework local areas will be required to set up a website similar to UCAS,dedicated to helping young people find work-based training, including apprenticeships and other vocational courses.

Providing access to this information in one easy-to-find location is a step in the right direction towards simplifying the job search process for young people, and should ultimately help increase the number of candidates being matched with the right role. Through working closer with employers, schools can also ensure that they are better equipped to offer the appropriate training and careers advice schemes that will ultimately help young candidates find the vocation best suited to them.”
