One in ten Brits commuting for over three hours a day

New research from Monster.co.uk has revealed that nearly one in ten Brits (9 percent) commute for over three hours a day, with over a third (34 percent) commuting for over an hour.

The news follows recent research from Waze, the traffic app, which found that Londoners endure the third longest commute (41 minutes) in comparison with 19 of the world’s biggest cities. Further stats reveal that more than a quarter (29 percent) commute up to 60 minutes to and from work, while only 17 percent of workers enjoy a short 15 minute journey to the ‘office’. Andy Sumner, Managing Director for Monster UK and Ireland, commented; “If you aren’t happy in your job, then the commute is likely to feel like a grind every day. However, assuming you’re content at work, then a little imagination can make the journey a lot less arduous, pleasant and even surprisingly productive.

Consider reading a book on the tube or listening to a podcast on a topic you’ve always wanted to learn. If you’re going to be sat at your desk all day, perhaps make walking or cycling part of your commute. If congestion is making your journey even longer, discuss flexible working with your boss. More and more companies are open to the idea and, as long as you’re putting in the right amount of hours, they don’t necessarily have to be 9 to 5.”
