A new survey* has revealed that 46% of workers are not motivated by motivational phrases in the workplace with 53% of those surveyed saying they would never use a motivational quote in their everyday lives.
We’ve all come across that one colleague or manager who tries to motivate a team with a motivational quote or phrasing. But how effective is a motivational phrase or quote at inspiring a team or individual? The survey revealed that while 46% of employees aren’t motivated by positive phrases – not all phrases are a redundant.
Least Motivational Phrases
According to those surveyed, almost half of those would not be motivated by a motivational phrase with “Do the impossible” being the least motivating (57%). This is followed by “The sky’s the limit” and “Keep calm and carry on” both with 54% stating they wouldn’t be motivated by these phrases.

Most Motivational Phrases
But not all phrases are ineffective, getting straight to the point, “Keep up the good work” is the most motivating phrase (58%). It’s clear and direct, recognises the effort put into a job and motivates a team member to continue with their work. Similarly, goal focused phrases take second and third place for motivational with “You can do this” (55%) and “Don’t give up” and “Go for it” at 53%, deemed as motivational.

Millennials are the most motivated
Millennials are the most responsive to motivational phrases, with the 25 – 35 demographic taking the lead for most motivated across all phrases, with an average of 60% being motivated by these phrases. Over 55s are the least motivated by these phrases with 52% on average of this demographic not being motivated at all by these phrases.
Methodology
To explore the attitudes towards positive and motivational phrases among UK consumers, we conducted a comprehensive survey targeting a nationally representative sample of 2,007 individuals aged 16 and above. This methodology section outlines the steps taken to ensure the collection of insightful and robust data, reflecting the diverse perspectives across different demographics within the UK.
The survey was designed to gauge participants’ feelings towards positive phrases, categorizing responses into several distinct attitudes.
