Success is short-lived, right? When success is defined by external validation, such as societal expectations, material possessions, or recognition from others, it is indeed short-lived. Relying solely on these transient factors often leaves us empty once initial excitement fades. However, when success comes from within, it is more sustainable.
When success emanates from our internal beliefs, values, and character, the achievement stems from who we are—our authentic self, values, and passions—it brings a profound sense of fulfilment and paves the way for sustainable success. Every step becomes purposeful and meaningful when our actions align with our core beliefs and values. Contrary to seeking external validation or temporary accomplishments, sustainable success is rooted in our inner harmony, which drives us forward with unwavering motivation, resilience, and adaptability.
In a world driven by external success metrics, it is easy to overlook the crucial role that our inner selves play in achieving sustainable success. While external factors such as networks, resources, and opportunities certainly contribute to success, the inner game—our values, character, purpose and meaning —is the foundation for long-lasting achievement.
Values are what are essential in how we live and work. They are established throughout our life through the accumulation of experiences and affect the decisions we make, how we perceive our environment, and how we behave.
Character comprises the quality and nature that are distinctive to who we are; it is specific, personal, and unique; it is how we are known; it’s the mental image that first comes to mind when people think about you. In the business world, character is everything!
Purpose and meaning are the drivers of our actions. Our actions become more intentional, focused, and meaningful when we have a clear sense of purpose and meaning. When we say things without knowing why we’re saying them or do things without clearly understanding the purpose and the ripple effects of our actions, we will surely experience more speed bumps until we learn the lessons.
When sustainable success is considered as an inner game, it involves a profound process of self-discovery and growth that encompasses three key aspects: getting clarity about our values, building our character, and acting out our purpose and meaning. Here are some practices that leaders could embody:
Cherish silence and solitude.
Silence is the journey to finding oneself. It is a powerful tool for leaders seeking to find their true selves and gain clarity about their values. In a fast-paced and often chaotic business environment, taking time for silence and introspection can be transformative.
In silence, you can hear your thoughts more clearly. Given that your thoughts are associated with your feelings, your feelings drive you to act, and your actions deliver results. Only when in solitude do you have the chance to dive down and discover the beliefs and values that shape your thoughts, to understand where they come from, and to reveal what they do to you today.
Recognised the voice of your ego.
The ego represents our psyche’s self-centred and self-protective aspect, significantly impacting our decision-making, behaviour, and relationships with others.
Unchecked ego often seeks to protect and enhance itself, leading to decisions driven by self-interest rather than the greater good of the team or organization; Unchecked ego can also exacerbate conflicts and impede conflict resolution. When leaders are unaware of their egos’ influence, it can lead to negative outcomes.
Check-in on your ego regularly. Here are a few questions to gauge whether your ego is talking:
- Are you pursuing goals to feel superior or have more glory?
- In the face of uncertainty, are you speaking to yourself fearfully and/or anxiously?
- Do you hear yourself speak in judgement or comparison?
- Do you lie, spin, or brag a bit to feel good about yourself?
- Do you feel threatened by others’ success or achievement?
- Are you seeking control over everything?
- Do you need to be right all the time?
Own your experiences.
Sustainable success is deeply intertwined with aligning your actions and decisions with your core values. Living harmoniously with your values makes your endeavours meaningful, purpose-driven, and authentic.
Whatever you experience in the outside world stems from the unique value system inside you. Owning your experiences means taking responsibility for your actions, decisions, and outcomes. It involves aligning your values and behaviours and understanding your motivations through knowing your Why, What and How.
Understanding your “why” means having a clear sense of purpose and motivation behind your actions; Knowing your “what” means defining the tangible actions you need to take to align with your purpose and value; Understanding your “how” involves the behaviours, attitudes, and strategies you employ to accomplish your goals in harmony with your values. When you are more self-aware and intentional in your choices, you can embark on a fulfilling and impactful journey that creates a positive and meaningful impact.
When success is approached as an inner game, it is no longer about the destination, but the journey of self-awareness and growth that shapes us along the way. By looking inwardly and embracing our authentic selves, we create a life of purpose, fulfillment, and sustained achievement that enables us to leave a meaningful and lasting legacy that transcends success defined by external measures.
