New government-backed guide to providing employee prayer rooms

New government-backed guide to providing employee prayer rooms

A new guide, Recovering the Calm,  has been released by St Ethelburga’s Centre for Reconciliation and Peace, with the backing of the Department for Communities and Local Government. The guide aims to promote the provision of prayer rooms to employees as an effective way of attracting, motivating and retaining staff.

The new guide from St Ethelburga’s, Recovering the Calm, which contains an introduction by Rt Hon Hazel Blears, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, offers practical guidance for employers in providing high quality prayer rooms and quiet space for employees.

The guide outlines employer’s obligations regarding the religious needs of employees, the business case for providing prayer rooms and best practice on creating and managing effective space. It explains how supporting employees with faith by providing quiet space can make good business sense by helping to attract, motivate and retain staff, and building a reputation for diversity.

The guide explores current best practice in creating and managing prayer space for employees. It also explores various aspects of best practice in the provision of prayer space such as the need to consult with employees over the management of the space, etiquette for users of the room, and sharing the resource between employees of different faith to promote inclusiveness.
