HM Courts and Tribunals Service have published the final version of the annual statistics for employment tribunals and the EAT for April 2010 to March 2011 which confirm an 8% fall in claims compared to last year but a 44% increase on 2008/9.

Key statistics in the report are: (i) there were 218,000 claims received, representing an 8% decrease on the previous year, but a 44% increase on claims received in 2008/2009; (ii) the average tribunal award in claims of unfair dismissal was £8,924; (iii) in unfair dismissal claims which proceeded to a hearing, 60% were unsuccessful and 40% succeeded; (iv) 355 costs awards were made in favour of respondents, while only 132 costs awards were made in favour of claimants; (v) at 31 March 2011 the caseload outstanding was 484, 300, an increase of 20% as at 31 March 2010.
