The Government have laid the draft National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Regulations 2016 before Parliament which will implement the National Living Wage (NLW) from 1 April 2016. A recent BIS survey revealed that many firms had not yet taken the steps which are necessary to prepare for the the introduction of the NLW and the Government are advising businesses to take the following action:
- know the correct rate of pay – £7.20 per hour for staff aged 25 and over;
- find out which staff are eligible for the new rate;
- update the company payroll in time for 1 April 2016; and,
- communicate the changes to staff as soon as possible
Employers can find out more about the NLW by visiting www.livingwage.gov.uk.
