The Guardian has reported that more than 2,000 current and former Morrisons supermarket workers have begun a group claim for alleged breach of data security after details of nearly 100,000 staff were leaked online. Andrew Skelton, who was a senior internal auditor, leaked the data after being disciplined over using the company’s postroom to conduct eBay deals. Skelton was subsequently given an 8-year prison sentence. The leaked information, including salaries, national insurance numbers, dates of birth and bank account details, was also sent to a number of newspapers. The staff are claiming that Morrisons was ultimately responsible for breaches of privacy, confidence and data protection law. Morrisons are contesting the case. They are not accepting liability for the actions of a rogue individual and have confirmed they are not aware that anybody suffered any financial loss from the breach.
