Citizens Advice (CA) have published the results of its research into income insecurity at work – jobs where weekly variations in hours or pay make it hard for people to plan or budget. The research found that people saw the security of their earned income to be as important as the level of the income itself. CA estimate that 4.5m people in England and Wales are in work that lacks income security. This number is made up of people on temporary or, zero hours contracts, those reliant on overtime, people working variable shift patterns or those working for agencies. CA have pledged to look more closely at the impact income insecurity has on people’s lives and what employees, employers and government can do in response.
