Mental Health: Self-help is the best help

Its time for us as a community on the whole to start looking at the impact of mental health issues on the society and work towards improving the social set up to be inclusive of the ill-effects and remediation of the same.

I’ve been contemplating writing about mental health for quite some time, but like many of us, I often find myself procrastinating. However, a recent encounter with a close friend reminded me of the importance of addressing the darker side of life that often goes unnoticed. Amidst the seemingly perfect & successful world portrayed on social media and our relentless pursuit of happiness, we seem lost & squandered!

In today’s society, we tend to put trauma and stress on the back burner, overlooking the impact it has on our overall well-being. This realization has strengthened my belief in certain practices that I’ve been implementing both professionally and as a father to my 12-year-old.

Listen: As individuals in positions of authority, whether at home or in the workplace, we often tend to rush conversations and focus solely on solving the problem at hand. However, there is no greater gift we can give someone than our time and attention. It’s crucial to truly listen and create a safe space for open dialogue.

No Assumptions, PLEASE: Assuming that everything is well with someone can lead to misunderstandings and missed opportunities to support others. Instead of mindlessly going about our own business, we should actively reach out and check if everything is alright. We must remember that many individuals may need help but struggle to ask for it.

Feedback: Feedback is the catalyst for change – whether it’s in behavior, thoughts, or actions. Engaging in ongoing dialogue, both personally and professionally, allows for thoughtful discussion and growth. Constructive feedback, given and received in a respectful manner, can create a positive impact on individuals and their environment.

Repeat The Cycle: It’s essential to remember that the above practices should be followed continuously. We cannot simply offer support and then leave it at that. Life is unpredictable, and one clear sky today does not guarantee the same tomorrow. Regularly checking in with individuals, including ourselv12es, ensures that we are actively engaged and equipped to handle any challenges that may arise.

Self-Help is the Best Help: Sometimes, the best way to alleviate our own burdens is by confiding in someone we trust. By sharing our thoughts and feelings, we can lighten the load we carry. The process of seeking support starts with self-awareness and acknowledging when we need assistance. As James Allen once said, “As he thinks, so he is; as he continues to think, so he remains.”

I believe its the right time as a society for us to collectively create community awareness on prioritizing mental health and create a supportive environment where individuals feel comfortable seeking help without any stigma.

By practicing active listening, avoiding assumptions, providing constructive feedback, maintaining ongoing engagement, and prioritizing self-care by mindful & logical choices, we can make a difference in our own lives and the lives of those around us – daily.
